Bojonegoro, East Java. Nine people including two children were confirmed dead and one person was still missing after a canoe sank in an Indonesian river, police said Tuesday.
The canoe with 16 people aboard, all Indonesians, went under in the Bengawan Solo river in East Java province on Monday. Six people survived the accident, according to Kanor sub--district police chief Margono.
"Nine people have died, one passenger is still missing. The rescue effort to find the missing person is still ongoing," Margono, who goes by one name, said.
Among the nine victims was a teenager and two children, he said.
"The passengers were trying to return to their village on the other side of the land by crossing the river," Margono added.
Earlier this month, 28 people died after a passenger ship capsized off Borneo island.
The Indonesian archipelago of more than 17,000 islands is heavily dependent on maritime services but the industry has a poor safety record and fatal accidents are common.
