Three children died after stacked bamboo chicken cages collapsed and fell on them in Mendalanwangi, Wagir district, 17 kilometers from Malang, East Java, on Monday.
The victims along with two other children were looking for maggots under the cages.
The dead victims were identified as Rudi Siswanto, 10, his younger brother Didik Agung Irwanto, 7, and friend Anjas, 8, while the two injured were Dedy Sutrisno and Yahuri, 10.
Eyewitnesses were quoted by kompas.com as saying that the boys often looked for maggots under a layer of chicken droppings at the farm. The maggots are sold to neighbors as food for song birds.
This morning, eyewitnesses said, the children were playing under the cages after they returned home from school at 11 a.m. All of a sudden, layered bamboo cages stacked three high collapsed onto them. Three of the children died instantly. Farm workers attempted to help the children, but only managed to save two.
The victims were later taken to Syaiful Anwar Hospital in Malang.
