67% of children in Kupang access porn sites: KPI

Up to 67 percent of children below the age of 13 in the East Nusa Tenggara capital of Kupang have accessed porn sites, mostly via mobile phones, a survey has found.

The survey, conducted recently by the East Nusa Tenggara chapter of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), also found that the trend was increasing.

“The more worrisome finding is that the children access porn sites through their cell phones while they're studying at school,” KPI’s regional head Mutiara Mauboy said Thursday in Kupang.

She said the children also access porn sites in Internet cafes.

The survey involved 300 respondents under 13-years-old in all of Kupang's six districts and 51 subdistricts, Mutiara added, as quoted by Antara.

Wat een bizar hoog aantal onder basisschoolleerlingen nota bene. Normaal ben ik bij nieuwsberichten geen uitgesproken scepticus, maar die KPI, ik neem aan dat onder hun functies ook censureren van media valt? Want in dat geval kunnen ze een hidden agenda hebben.
Niet dat ik porno ga zitten verdedigen, maar wat betreft de aandacht die pornografie in Indonesische media krijgt, gaan m'n gedachten steeds terug naar de zanger van de band Peterpan, Ariel Irham, die de pech had dat erotische homevideo's van hem uitlekten naar het internet, en begin dit jaar werd veroordeeld voor 3,5 jaar gevangenisstraf.

Ik zou minder sceptisch zijn als het hier ging om middelbare scholieren, 12-18 jarigen. Het lijkt me vreemd dat 13-min-jarigen überhaupt porno zouden willen zien, maar ik ken het leven in de stad Kupang ook niet.

What a bizarrely high number, among elementary school students no less. I'm usually not outspokenly skeptical when it comes to most news reports, but this KPI,.. I assume one of their tasks is also censorship of media? Because in that case they may have a hidden agenda.
Not that I'm defending porn, but concerning the kind of attention pornography gets in Indonesian media, my thoughts keep going back to the singer of the band Peterpan, Ariel Irham, who was unfortunate enough to have erotic home videos featuring him surface on the net, and was subsequently sentenced to 3,5 years of prison.

I'd be less skeptical if this were about high school students, 12-18-year-olds. It just seems strange that below-13-year olds would even want to see porn, but then again I'm not familiar with Kupang society.
