Bogor. Two people died in a landslide in Bogor after heavy rains lashed the area since Thursday evening.
Nineteen-year-old Galih and her 10-year-old nephew, Aditya, were killed when a landslide buried their house in the Cibogor neighborhood of Central Bogor subdistrict at about 9:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Galih’s body was recovered from the mud and debris about 12 hours after the landslide.
Although she had been buried beneath massive piles of earth, her body was closer to the surface than her nephew’s, which was recovered more than an hour later at about 10 a.m. on Friday.
“It was raining really hard and all of a sudden the cliff near the victims’ house just collapsed,” said 35-year-old Yadi, who witnessed the accident.
Yadi said that Galih’s grandmother Ana, 65, and Aditya’s mother, Dina, 32, had managed to flee to safety.
“Galih also managed to escape, but then she rushed back inside to try and find Aditya, who was trapped,” she said.
Dina’s husband, Agus, a 39-year-old security guard, was at work when the landslide occurred and came home to learn that his son was dead.
“Agus couldn’t accept what had happened to his family. He fainted several times,” Yadi said.
Lukmansyah, a member of the search and rescue team, said efforts to recover the bodies had been slow because they were concerned about causing more landslides on the unstable ground.
“The other members of the family survived because they were on the second floor of the house, while the victims were on the ground floor,” he said. “At least 80 cubic meters of dirt covered the house.”
The landslide damaged four other homes in the area. Bogor’s city secretary, Bambang Gunawan, said the administration would relocate the entire neighborhood to a safer area.
