Bogor. Six people died and three others were missing after torrential rains in Bogor, West Java, on Monday triggered a landslide that destroyed at least five homes.
“The incident happened at 1:30 a.m. last night,” Bogor Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head Yos Sudrajat told Jakarta Globe on Tuesday. “The torrential rain poured over the Mekarwangi village, in the Cariu subdistrict, and triggered the collapse of a 30-meter-high slope and buried five houses.”
The five people said to have died in the landslide were identified as Dedeh, 38; Risma, 13; Wahyu, 17; Mardi 37; Sopiah 60; and a 4-year-old boy named Riski.
“We are still searching for three more people, while seven have been rescued and sustained only minor injuries — they have been treated,” Yos said, adding that a total of 30 personnel from the agency has been deployed to search for the victims.
Bogor Police chief, Adj. Sr. Comr. Sony Movianto said 100 police officers and soldiers have also been deployed to take part in the rescue efforts. According to Sony, those missing were clients of Sopiah, who worked as a traditional masseuse treating fractured bones.
Massages are commonly seen in Indonesia as treatments for fractures.
“We still don’t know the identity of the missing victims who were unable to escape the landslide as they were being treated,” he said.
