Former Bekasi mayor and graft convict Mochtar Mohammad has been arrested in Seminyak, Bali, after allegedly refusing to hand himself in to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) because he had not received an official copy of a court ruling.
He was arrested at the Villa Lalu in the trendy tourist area, Antara news agency reported Wednesday.
Earlier this month, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician was sentenced to six years in jail after the Supreme Court found him guilty of four counts of graft, worth Rp 1.6 billion (US$174,090).
The Supreme Court’s ruling came via an appeal against the West Java corruption court’s acquittal of Mochtar last November.
Mochtar lawyer Sira Prayuna previously refused to reveal his client’s whereabouts, saying that he remained in Indonesia.
He said that his client did not intend to refute the sentence, but there was no legal basis to carry it out as the official copy of the ruling was still on its way to the KPK.
