A Royal Malaysian Police officer has been arrested for allegedly attempting to bring crystal methamphetamine into Indonesia through Polonia International Airport in Medan, North Sumatra.
The arrest of the Malaysian police officer, identified as Lance Cpl. Salim bin Muhammad Yusof, 49, for drug smuggling was a first in Indonesia, airport customs investigations chief Ahmad Fatoni said.
“The suspect, as well as the crystal meth, has been handed over to the BNN. Currently, a follow-up investigation by the agency is ongoing,” Faton said, on Tuesday.
Police said that Salim was questioned by immigration officers for suspicious behavior after he arrived from Kuala Lumpur on Monday afternoon. An inspection of his wallet turned up the drugs.
“When being examined, he found that it was difficult to escape, as 0.5 grams of crystal meth were found in his wallet,” Fatoni .
A Malaysian diplomat said that the consulate general in Medan had not been notified by officials of the arrest.
“It’s a state matter; so, they should first inform us about the incident, not journalists because we are the representatives of the Malaysian government in the country,” Malaysian consul Nor Azhar Hajis told The Jakarta Post, on Tuesday
