Three siblings died Tuesday night after a fire engulfed their home in Penjaringan, North Jakarta while they were asleep and their parents were away.
The fire started at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday while Lelisa, 14, Mahyana, 12, and Ipan,10, were sleeping on the second floor of their three-story shop-house in Muara Karang Business Center in Pluit, Penjaringan.
The parents left the house just before the fire started, according to reports.
Putut Yantoko, an official with the North Jakarta fire brigade, said 13 fire engines were sent to the fight the blaze, and managed to put the fire out at midnight. Putut said the fire was likely triggered by an electrical malfunction.
“The electricity was off around the neighborhood, so there was a short circuit," he said. "People said some of the family was inside the shop-house, so officers immediately looked for them and found [the three children] already dead."
The remains of the victims have been sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta for autopsies.
“The Penjaringan Police are investigating the incident,” Putut said, as quoted by the Jakarta administration’s news portal beritajakarta.com.
