Police shot and killed a suspected gang member and arrested over 100 people in a brawl between two gangs in Cengkareng, West Jakarta on Wednesday, the majority of whom are suspected of being linked to infamous gang leader and murder suspect John Refra Kei.
“We’ve arrested all 102 underlings of John Kei. They are being questioned at the West Jakarta Police headquarters,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Thursday.
He added police had also arrested 8 people from a rival gang which is reportedly led by infamous gangster "Hercules."
Rikwanto said the 110 gangsters violated the 1951 Emergency Law, as well as the Criminal Code.
Hundreds of people from John Kei’s gang reportedly attacked members of the Hercules group who had been guarding a vacant plot of land on Jalan Kamal in Cengkareng.
A brawl erupted, and the Hercules group returned with more people, according to reports. Police dispatched officers to stop the fight, and attempted to settle the dispute along with lawyers from each group.
But the mob kept fighting until police arrested all 110 of them.
A Innova minivan carrying members of the Hercules group fled the scene when police opened fire, killing one man and injuring several others.
“[The eight persons] were inside the Innova automobile shot by police personnel, from which police seized a number of sharp weapons,” Rikwanto said, adding that knives were also found in automobiles carrying the alleged members of the John Kei gang.
Rikwanto said the attack was reportedly ordered by Rais Kei, a senior member of the John Kei gang.
“We’re currently still searching for Rais Kei; he’s on our wanted list,” Rikwanto said.
