A baby girl that was snatched from Wahidin Sudirohusodo Hospital in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Tuesday morning, has been found.
Suci Almadinah, who was born on Oct. 28, is now in the safe hands of her mother Irmawati and father Supriadi.
Tamalanrea Police officers found the baby at a boarding house on Jl. Bung, Makassar, Thursday afternoon. She was found with Sitti Mutiara, 21, a resident living in the boarding house.
The kidnapper, identified as SLT, was not at the house when police officers arrived. SLT, who is listed as a student at STIK health science institute in Makassar, was captured Friday morning at her friend’s house on Jl. Manuruki, Makassar.
Police named her as a suspect for allegedly kidnapping the baby and she has been detained at the Tamalanrea Police office. SLT was charged under Article 83 of the 2002 Law No. 23 on child protection, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and Rp 300 million (US$31,159) in fines.
SLT, who stayed in the same room with the baby, took her while the baby’s grandmother, Ratnawati, fell asleep. However, SLT left her bag, in which police found her identity and tracked her.
According to Tamalanrea Police precinct commander Comr. Amiruddin, SLT wanted to show the baby to her mother in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
SLT, who is unmarried, said that she was pregnant but aborted the infant. “Her mother will come to Makassar. She panicked, kidnapped Suci and planned to introduce the baby to her mother as her own child,” Amiruddin said.
“SLT hoped that her mother would forgive her should she appear with a baby,” he added.
Amiruddin said that SLT had been staying at the hospital since Sunday and had planned to snatch a baby from the hospital.
