Fire gutted 41 houses in the police housing complex in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, on Thursday, allegedly caused by an electrical short circuit.
Kramat Jati subdistrict head Wahyudi said the fire came from a resident's house. “The house belonging to Supomo was empty when the fire started,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.
A neighborhood leader, Sutomo, said the neighbors were forced to break into Supomo's house to extinguish the blaze, but it was too late and the fire had spread to other houses around Supomo's.
The East Jakarta Fire Fighter Agency deployed around 26 fire trucks to extinguish the fire.
Residents whose houses were burned down have been evacuated to a community hall and mosques.
Casualties currently remain unclear.
