Majalengka, West Java. Six men died following a Sunday morning party in Majalengka, West Java after consuming potentially tainted alcohol.
Around 20 people at the event were reportedly mixing “Big Boss” vodka with Kuku Bima energy drinks. After ingesting the mixture, the victims allegedly started to feel dizzy and vomit.
Five of the partygoers died on Sunday, though one passed away on Monday after being admitted to the hospital.
Ten others who ingested the cocktails remain in critical condition as of Monday, and they are currently being treated at Majalengka Hospital.
Majalengka Police chief Adj. Comr. Udin Suharna said police were investigating the incident and questioning the victims’ family members.
“We’re also investigating the types of drinks they consumed,” Udin told Indonesian news portal republika.co.id.
State-run news agency Antara reported last July that police confiscated hundreds of bottles of adulterated liquor — including several bottles of Big Boss — from a house in Jambi, Sumatra, after local customers became suspicious of the contents of the bottles being sold.
Tainted alcohol — often composed of watered-down methanol and various dying agents — is responsible for several deaths per year in Indonesia, especially among foreigners and local youths.
Twenty-five people, including four foreigners, died after drinking tainted palm wine in Bali in 2009.
More recently, a British backpacker died in Sumatra after ingesting a locally made whiskey called Mansion House on April 20.
