Nine people died and 11 others were injured after a bus caught fire while driving through the West Sumatra district of Sijunjung early Friday morning.
The Family Raya bus, which was carrying 37 people, was heading from Bangko in Jambi to Padang when it suddenly caught fire.
Hardiwan, the head of the Sijunjung office of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), said the fire might have been caused by a short circuit.
“The bus caught fire at 1:20 a.m. today,” Hardiwan told Indonesian news portal vivanews.com on Friday. He added that it took fire fighters a half an hour to put out the blaze. “
The nine dead victims have been immediately rushed to hospital,” he said.
Police were seeking to identify the victims through autopsies, Hardiwan said.
The injured victims, meanwhile, were being treated at a nearby community health center (Puskesmas), he added.
