The Jakarta Globe, Oct 4 2015

Jakarta. The city's police have released more details in the murder of a nine-year-old girl, whose body was found wrapped in cardboard in Kamal, an area in Kalideres near the Soekarno-Hatta Airport, on Friday night.

The girl, formally identified by family and referred to as PNF, was likely to have been suffocated and suffered sexual abuse, police said on Sunday.

"The cause of the death was apparently due to suffocation in the neck," said the Jakarta Police’s general crime unit, Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti.

The body of the girl was found at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday and was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital for identification.

Police said they have visited the parents of the girl, known as their initials AS and IF, and questioned some witnesses.

A team of doctors handling the autopsy found evidence of sexual assault and DNA has been sent to a lab for further examination.

The parents attended the Kalideres police office on Saturday to report their child as missing, Krishna said.

"A photo was shown and they immediately fainted," said Krishna.

"The father of the victim has separated from the mother. We haven't questioned the mother, but we have talked to the uncle, grandmother and aunty to find out the last known location of her and whether they know who the victim went home with. The information wasn't that significant," said Krishna.

Seen on the Run

The victim's cousin, identified as Kelvin, told police that PNF had been seen running on Friday around 9.45 a.m. after the victim's second grade elementary school class finished at 9.30 a.m.

"The cousin asked: where are you going?' but she kept running," Krishna said, adding that he had tried to follow before losing sight of her.

Kelvin had seen the victim at around 9.45 a.m. after school

Krishna said the locatation between her school and the place where her body was found is about five kilometers.

Police have deployed a major task force to investigate the case.

Police have said the killer of a 9-year old girl found dead on Friday may suffer sexual deviations and have urged parents in the capital city to be cautious.

The Jakarta Police’s general crime unit, Sr. Comr. Krishna Murti said that after investigating the condition of the victim's remains the perpetrator appears to suffer severe sexual deviation.

Krishna previously said the girl found dead in Kamal, an area in Kalideres near the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, on Friday was likely to have been suffocated to death and sexually assaulted.

"I want to tell the community that this kind of violence happens a lot in Jakarta ... in villages, where kids are supposedly playing safely. This is commonly committed by pedophiles targeting young children," said Krishna.

"These people, under the normal circumstances we can't see the indicators [of pedophilia]," he said.

"Kids overseas are taught, if an unknown person approaches them, they will scream 'Stranger! Stranger!'" Krishna said, adding that Jakartans should be wary of unusual behavior.
