Thousands of ducks found dead in Bandung

Many duck farmers in Bandung regency, West Java have suffered big losses after thousands of their ducks suddenly died recently from what is suspected to have been the avian influenza virus, also known as the bird flu.

Duck farmer Didi, who lives in the Paseh district, revealed that 1,500 ducks owned by another farmer all died in a period of just two days.

“Duck farmers in Paseh district will suffer losses amounting to some Rp 20 million [US$1,712] each because of the high number of dead ducks,” he told Antara news agency.

Odas, another duck farmer, said that the farmers had done whatever was necessary to cure and protect their ducks from the bird flu, but their efforts had proven futile.

Meanwhile, duck farmer Agus said that workers from the relevant agencies had instructed duck farmers to burn their duck pens as soon as possible as an emergency precaution, with the promise that the Bandung regency administration would give them financial assistance. However, such assistance had yet to materialize.
