A Prambanan Express (Prameks) commuter train serving the Surakarta-Kutoarjo route was overturned at Krajan village in Kalasan, Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, leaving 40 people injured.
The train, carrying around 580 passengers, departed Surakarta at 4 p.m. and overturned at 4:45 p.m., said Eko Budiyanto, spokesman of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia Operational Region (DAOP) VI Yogyakarta and Central Java, on Wednesday.
Two train cars from the total of five were toppled on their sides, with the first having turned against the direction of the route.
The injured people were taken to Panti Rini Prambanan Hospital, Bhayangkara Hospital and Persaudaraan Jamaah Haji Indonesia Hospital in Kalasan.
“Most were injured from bumping into hard surfaces,” said Enaryaka, an officer from the Yogyakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).
The Surakarta-Kutoarjo route has started operating again after being halted due to the incident, according to KAI spokesman Sugeng Priyono.
He said that the wrecked train cars had been transported to Surakarta to be repaired at the Balai Yasa depot in Yogyakarta.
The company had also repaired some of the broken parts of the rail tracks, such as the railroad tie and the rail fastening system, Sugeng added.
Trains passing through the scene of the accident, however, can only run at a maximum speed of 10-kilometers per hour to avoid another accident, according to him.
As for the cause of the accident, Sugeng said that the company was still investigating the case.
“We will seek information from all related parties,” he said.
Eko, meanwhile, has apologized to the passengers on behalf of the company. Treatment cost of the injured victims will be paid by state-owned insurance company PT. Jasaraharja.
