Police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly stealing human remains from a local cemetery in Cilacap, Central Java, to be used in a black magic ritual.
Resi Rokis Suhana, 27, was arrested at a house in Central Cilacap on Sunday morning.
“We arrested him at 7:30 a.m. this morning, and then asked the perpetrator to show us where he had hidden the bones,” Cilacap Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Andry Triaspoetra told Indonesian news portal vivanews.com. “The perpetrator is still being questioned.”
Police found the bones piled up in a banana plantation not from the site of the arrest. Resi said that he stole the remains from three graves in the Sabuk Janur cemetery, located in the subdistrict of North Cilacap.
Along with the bones, police found offerings, a bottle of perfume, cotton, a white sheet, a book containing Koranic verses and a rope commonly used to fasten the white sheet used to cover the newly deceased in Islamic burial rituals.
Andry added that Resi claimed he had collected the human remains to cast a black magic spell that would earn him the ability to fly.
Earlier reports said the bones of a twin baby, as well as the skull of Endah Setyowati, who was 24 when she died, had gone missing from their graves.
The incident has horrified local residents.
